Pioneer is an original Sci-Fi short film set in the not-too-distant future, written by our very own Paul Massey.

A number of ideas were floated at the start of the script development, initially, the spacecraft was much larger but as the story moved on it was decided that the ship should be very small and based on an old, previously worn out well-used craft.

The ship used in the film is very different from these early concepts as the script changed and ideas formed.

The spacecraft in the film is now based on the idea of an old delivery drone that has been modified to include a new propulsion system.

The Spacecraft

In the final version of the story, the delivery drone is a Chinese-made, small, autonomous, low-altitude craft used on Earth for many years. These old models can be readily bought on the used market for relatively few credits.

Our main character bought one of these drones to adapt the cargo space to fit it with a small cockpit, then further modify the drone by including his prototype propulsion system and testing it close to Earth.

Below are a few wireframe images (to minimise spoilers) of the final model used in the film.

The existing engine/thruster "pods" on either side are retained for low-altitude flight and the huge new propulsion system dominates the rear of the craft.

The ship is well-used and shows numerous damage and wear as well as lots of graffiti and a few stickers that have been applied when it was still a delivery drone or when it was laid up in a scrap / spare's compound somewhere.
